Joss Whedon has a job comic book geeks would kill for – the power to shape, write and direct the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So is he using his power wisely?
Early reports are good. It’s still over two years away, but a draft of the script has been finished, according to the Hollywood Reporter, and the cast will feature some new heroes. “A brother-sister act,” Whedon says.
Smart money’s on Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, also known as Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. The offspring of Magneto, they’ve been on the good and bad side. And in Ultimates, which is partly what The Avengers was based on, they were part of the team which fought back the Chitauri. Other Marvel brother-sister teams include Captain Britain and Psylocke, Northstar and Aurora, and of course, the Invisible Woman and the Human Torch. Apart from the duo that make up half of the Fantasic Four, these aren’t particularly notable or well known superhero sibling teams.
Unless Whedon is going for a fake-out in which he throws in two very minor characters that are brother and sister, we’re probably going to see Magneto’s twins in the 2015 Avengers follow-up.
So Wanda and Pietro. Things could get a bit muddy, as Fox has control of the X-Men. According to Marvel Studio’s Kevin Feige: “If [Fox] wants to use them in an X-Men movie, they could, I’d we want to use them in an Avengers movie we could.”
As far as we know, as long as the Avengers 2 didn’t mention the fact that Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch aren’t mutants, it would be fine. If it is these two Whedon is referring to, it will be interesting to see what kind of backstory they’ll have.
