Guitar Wolf is a Japanese garage rock power trio founded in 1987. They describe their musical style as “jet rock’n’roll”, a phrase that they coined. After wrapping up a 20+ date US tour, they will be heading to Australia this November and December. Their new album, Beast Vibrator, is available at all shows.
We had a quick chat with them.
Why do you think you’ve done so well outside of Japan? Do you think there’s a universal appeal to “Jet Rock”?
I’ve never thought ‘I’ve done well’. I just don’t want to stop shooting Bullet Rock to your heart.
You’ve been featured in two B-grade sci-fi horror films. Are you all big fans of this genre, and if so, what is your favourite film of the genre?
Yes, of course. I like them. B-grade films are full of surprising ideas. A Japanese film “The Machine Girl” is brilliant.
Have you seen Pacific Rim, which features kaiju?
No, not yet. It should be as good as to talk about in the interview. I’ll catch up when I have a chance.
You’re known for your very “frenetic” live shows, often with very little talking. Is there any reason for this?
I don’t know how we are known to people. Tell us what you think. Advise us!
Your newest album, ‘Beast Vibrator’, has fantastic liner notes on your website. I particularly liked the last song, ‘Female Machine Gun’. How do you think your version compares with PUFFY’s?
Yep, ours is more punkish, I think. I collaborated with Jon Spencer on writing that song. I like the way we made Jon’s song more punk.
You’re playing multiple shows in Melbourne (at the Espy, the Gasometer and the Tote). Is there any reason for that?
Because Melbourne is a Rock City.
