Review: Pinocchio, Vampire Slayer
It’s always the way: a monster is in a book or movie which becomes big, and a spate of related content rides that monster’s popularity – see vampires, werewolves, zombies for examples. So I was pretty skeptical of Pinocchio, Vampire Slayer. I’m not against vampire stories (I adore Buffy the Vampire Slayer), but recently the vampirisation and zombification of various properties strikes me more as an attempt to cash in on a trend combined with a title we know and love. That’s not even getting into the “Children’s Fairytales Reimagined Darker, Grittier, and Much, Much Worse” trend that is, to be frank, not very good.
Pinocchio is probably one of the less sexy iterations of the vampire hunter, being part of a decidedly PG-rated story to boot, but Pinocchio, Vampire Slayer is very tongue-in-cheek, surprisingly clever and dark but still charming. The art style is energetic and kind of cute in that exaggerated kid’s cartoon style, which contrasts well with that darkness mixed with zany humour.
I’ll admit that I wasn’t expecting much from Pinocchio, Vampire Slayer, but I’m happy to say that it’s well worth the read, even if you’re all vampired out.
