Review: These Things Take Wine
Some people are like a fine wine; better with age.
These Things Take Wine, the new one-woman performance from cabaret sensation Natasha York is sort of about that. It’s about wine. Not, it should be made very clear, about alcoholism. You can chose to either feel bad about “a glass” of wine at the end of the day, or just enjoy the ride. Until the hangover, naturally.
Over the course of an hour, several glasses of red, and a plethora of songs given a bit of a twist, “Tasha” takes us with her on a particularly debaucherous night out. From pre-drinks to police encounters, chicken nuggets in your bra, hijacking buskers, and everything in between, all that can be certain is you’re not going to want to go to work in the morning.
Daniele Buatti is at the piano, and the Butterfly Club play a perfect host. A distinct highlight for me was York’s take on The Ladies Who Lunch; Elaine Stritch’s signature piece and its famous cry “I’ll drink to that!” gets a modern revival that’s bitter, judgmental and hilarious. And then there’s Michael Jackson’s anthem of equality, Black or White.
