Review: Glory Box La Revolución
It’s hard to describe Glory Box to people. My best answer was something along the lines of: “It’s like a cabaret variety show…with like, singing and burlesque and stuff?” And I’m meant to be a writer.
In all seriousness, Glory Box La Revolución is bizarre, indescribable and well, glorious. A perfect mix of debauchery, circus acts, comedy, dance, music and straight-up nudity, the burlesque show is perfectly at home in the gorgeous Melba Spiegeltent in Collingwood. With over a decade of experience under their belts, Moira Finucane and Jackie Smith have perfected Glory Box, blending more traditional acts (hooping, chair balancing) with more controversial burlesque (there is penetration involved): the end result is sheer brilliance.
The wonderful thing about cabaret is that it encompasses so much: Glory Box is a wild romp through so many different types of performance that all complement each other, and it’s so clear the performers are all on the same page, even if their performance of choice varies wildly. With a bit of Cuban flavour (they are leaving Melbourne for Cuba, after all), Glory Box is a delicately crafted, wonderfully balanced combination of weird shit that is riveting and thought-provoking, cool shit that you can simply enjoy, and hilarious, bizarre shit that you’ll love, even if you’re not quite sure what it all means.
Finucane and Smith are taking their show on the road to Cuba (hence the title) and promise that it won’t be back in Melbourne for years – which seems like an awfully long time to be deprived of such mad brilliance. The upside is, well, they’ll be overseas bringing their particular brand of debauchery-burlesque-cabaret to more people, and everyone that goes will be contributing to that. There are raffles, so bring your gold coins, and drinks, so bring your drinking shoes, and just enjoy the night, wherever it may lead.
Glory Box La Revolución is playing at the Melba Spiegeltent in Collingwood until 13 September, 2015. For more information and for tickets, head to their website.
