Review: YUMMY

How best to describe YUMMY, directed by and featuring James Welsby as Valerie Hex, now playing at the Melba Spiegeltent? To call it a drag cabaret burlesque circus, featuring Karen From Finance, Tanzer, James Andrews, Beni Lola, Hannie Helsden, Benjamin Hancock, Zelia Rose barely scratches the surface; this incredible cast of performers have been brought together to create a show that defies genre, and really has to be seen to be fully appreciated.

Karen MCs the event, also performing a few numbers; a highlight for me being her cover of Vanessa Carlton’s A Thousand Miles. She’s an established Melbourne icon, and self declared “Queen of Corporate”. The entire cast are seasoned in a variety of fields; be it song, dance, circus burlesque, this are all experts at what they do, and it shows.

The Melba Spiegeltent is a perfect venue; an intimate space that lends itself well to the circus-y atmosphere. The audience were all comfortable and relaxed; some brief mention should be made to it being a very kink friendly space, and so this is definitely only for those of an open mind. And such outfits! Glitter everywhere! Like staring into a disco ball.

The show is stated as only 90 minutes, but the night I attended pushed out to a little over two hours. Honestly, though? Even if it does, you’re still going to be left wanting more.

YUMMY plays at the Melba Spiegeltent until 22 April. For tickets, head to the MICF website.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe. Writer/Observer.
