It’s a tale as old as time; boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, boy and girl write and perform a delightfully absurd show based on a loose, wacky premise. From the lovebirds that brought you the bizarre podcast “bigsofttitty.png”, Demi Lardner and Tom Walker collaborate for their first festival show together. We Mustn’t is simply about two mischievous twin brothers who are left home alone for a day and from then on it gets as chaotic as you’d expect from these two comedians with a passion for the absurd tone of performing arts.
As soon as the duo walk on stage in identical costumes, the spirit of vaudeville appears, soon complemented with their brand of unique insanity. Assisted by props and visual aids, the twins play a number of games allowing Lardner and Walker to churn out sequences of the hi-jinks they obviously enjoy and which their fanbase have grown to love.
The opening night of We Mustn’t had its fair share of bugs, such as technical difficulties or heckling from a punter obviously not familiar with the comedians’ style, but it only strengthens the show as it’s evident the two feed off chaos. The possessive glee they emote leaves no room for on-stage awkwardness and their close bond only pushes for a more entertaining time.
Loyal devotees of Lardner and Walker will definitely leave satisfied after spending an hour with these clownish characters and the uninitiated may feel restless during a couple of the bits. But if you’re looking for something that’s different and unrestricted fun, then this is the show for you.
We Mustn’t is on at 11pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights until 20 April as part of the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Tickets are available via the MICF website.
