Kit Goodman! A Good Man is possibly one of the most unexpected shows at the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. When the description of the show boasts of appealing to all those who have felt personally victimised by PTV, many comedy lovers were probably expecting a format more alike to a  show perhaps with some Myki themed jokes.

Instead Kit Goodman! A Good Man feels like a the yearly play of a high school drama class who somehow ducked out from the supervision of their teacher. Tucked within the Melbourne University campus, the setting of the Guild Theatre Melbourne really does emphasise the atmosphere of a school play – the handmade (though, very cleverly used) props matching this.

The concept of the play is an interesting one – a killer on the lose on the tram network of Melbourne, the best detective the city has to offer teaming up with a Myki inspector who has a personal stake in the case. Interesting in theory however doesn’t always transcribe to interesting on stage. There are key moments and characters throughout that have the audience in fits of laughter, the two protective service officers patrolling the mean stations of Brunswick for one – or the elf queen residing in the basement of the police station was another. There were possible just too many characters within the show in the amount of time to really create good character depth for any. Not something solved by lengthening the play however, as the running time of 90 minutes already felt quite long.

All up Kit Goodman! A Good Man is an interesting lampoon of the classic detective story, melding the familiarity of classic Melbourne moments with a neo noir sense of story. Definitely something different for the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Kit Goodman! A Good Man is showing at the Guild Theatre Melbourne 9th April – 13th April as part of the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
