Fresh and Fruity is a fun and uplifting piece of circus comedy from a variety of different and talented artists. Although it was messy at times (both in terms of performance style and quite literally messy), it channeled all that is enjoyable about the circus and brought into a healthy and entertaining show that allows for a different outcome every night.
Rather than having a single, continuous act, Fresh and Fruity keeps up interest by instead featuring a series of smaller guest artists performing. Each one brought a mad and energetic show – but each was completely unique from each other. There was the softly spoken clown, the peculiar banana man, and what can only be described as the mad rat woman – no two act was the same, but they all got laughs and loud applause from the audience. On top of this, there was a live band (complete with red noses) that kept the audience entertained during the “intermission” and provided sound effects (when those were not being provided by the actual sound effects person), and often contributed at random but funny times. Although rough and ready, the performers were all skilled and knew what they were doing, keeping the audience (and probably themselves) on their toes.
Kudos must be given to the “hostess” (MC) Cherese Sonkkila. She had clearly put a lot of work into the show, and her own set was fantastic in its originality – I suspect there are not many who have seen a lesbian noir fruit-themed erotica. Apart from her set, she kept the energy high and engaged the audience in a fun and engaging manner. Plus her “assistant” did assist with laughs with the “dumb secretary” approach – they were clearly having an absolute blast on stage, and it showed.
Overall, the show was uplifting and a bit of silly circus fun. As with all these shows with clowns, it was messy and loose, but fun and funny – definitely worth checking out for those who have an interest in circus performances (or fruit). As an addition to the Melbourne 2019 Fringe Festival, this is definitely a good one.
Fresh and Fruity is showing at the Rattlesnake Saloon as part of the 2019 Melbourne Fringe Festival. Tickets can be purchased here.
