Sometimes I’m just casually scrolling around on Tumblr when I see something that makes me both happy and sad at the same time. This time it was a Veronica Mars-related gifset, reminding me that there are only three precious seasons of Veronica Mars (plus an incoming movie!). So in the spirit of breaking your spirit and crushing your soul, here are seven brilliant shows that got canned too soon. Read ’em (and then watch them) and weep, boys and girls.

Veronica Mars

Ran for: 3 seasons (and an upcoming movie).

Stars: Kristen Bell, Percy Daggs III, Teddy Dunn, Jason Dohring, Francis Capra

Plot: Girl detective deals with death of best friend, alienation from former social group, makes new friends, solves many crimes, kicks many butts.

That’s it.

That’s the show.

My So Called Life

Ran for: 1 season

Stars: Claire Danes, Jared Leto, Bess Armstrong, Wilson Cruz, AJ Langer, Devon Gummersall, Devon Odessa, Lisa Wilhoit, Tom Irwin

Plot: Okay, so I was approximately one year old when this show came out, but hey, that doesn’t stop me from watching 80’s teen movies. This show is credited with launching Claire Danes’ and Jared Leto’s careers, portraying teen life somewhat realistically in all its awkward, angsty glory.

Arrested Development

Ran for: 4 seasons

Stars: Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Portia De Rossi, Alia Shawkat, David Cross

Plot: Seriously, everyone is aware of this show, right? It’s the story of a wealthy family that lost everything, and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together.

Just watch it.

Flight of the Conchords

Ran for: 2 seasons

Stars: Bret McKenzie, Jemaine Clement, Rhys Darby, Kristen Schaal, Arj Barker

Plot: This is a fictional account of the New Zealand comedy duo Flight of the Conchords. Music! Comedy! Deadpan New Zealanders! This show has the lot.

Pushing Daisies

Ran for: 2 seasons

Stars: Lee Pace, Chi McBride, Kristen Chenoweth, Anna Friel.

Plot: One of my favourite shows ever, obviously. A Bryan Singer creation, Pushing Daisies is about Ned the Piemaker, who has the ability to bring dead things back to life with a touch. However, there are two conditions: the second touch brings death, and if an alive-again thing lives longer than a minute, something else with equal “life value” will die in its place. The only person who knows his secret at the start of this show is Emerson Cod, private detective. Crimes are much easier to solve when you can talk to the dead person…

I can’t begin to stress how excellent this show is. It’s not for everyone – there’s a very “story book” feel to it, with vivid colours, omniscient narration and alliterative and/or amusing names – but give it a try. Also, Kristen Chenoweth gets to sing. Aw yeah.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Ran for: 2 seasons

Stars: Lena Headey, Thomas Dekker, Summer Glau

Plot: A continuation of the first two Terminator movies, this basically follows John and Sarah Connor as they try to evade  I especially enjoy it because out of the three protagonists, two are women. And shock horror, the show doesn’t lose anything at all from not having a cast of male protagonists with a token lady. It has the same core as the Terminator movies: escaping from the Terminators. There’s another goal though, and that is to stop Skynet from ever existing (as explored in the second movie.) I don’t want to spoil anything, so just watch it. There’s action, mystery, new characters (both Terminators and humans), growth and it ends on an incredible cliffhanger which could effectively change the entire canon.

Firefly

Ran for: 1 season

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, Morena Baccarin

No “cancelled too soon” conversation I have ever had goes by without someone (usually me) mentioning Firefly. Sigh. The light of my life, snuffed out too soon by the cruel overlords at Fox. Perhaps that’s a little bit of overkill, but my point stands – Firefly is a cult classic, and ended up being extremely popular with sci-fi lovers. A space Western about a crew that pulls heists to keep on flying, while protecting a pair of siblings on the run from the government.

So good.
